Future Gate Sci-fi Film Festival 2025
film competition | genre legends | documentaries | student film competition | exhibitions | discussions
The largest Central European film festival of sci-fi films and culture, Future Gate, will start in Brno on October 7 at the Art cinema and will move to the Brno Observatory and Planetarium from October 10. In addition to the main film competition, genre legends and documentaries, it will once again bring a student film competition and the expected previews. The theme of this year’s 12th year will be “the human body”. You can find the full program at www.futuregate.cz.
We are waiting for the topics of cybernetic enhancement, genetic modification and the involvement of artificial intelligence. What does it mean to be human? If we can improve our physical abilities or even replace body parts with technology, are we not losing something essential about our humanity? Is our body just a tool that we can change at will, or does it have its own value and identity that we should respect? Future Gate 2025 will once again look for inspiration in films.

At the turn of the 1970s and 80s, Steven Spielberg directed two films about encounters with otherworldly beings. Close Encounters of the Third Kind is more enigmatic; E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, by contrast, is a pure family film: slightly sentimental, deeply touching, and perhaps the very best of its genre. Spielberg struck gold with his casting, from Henry Thomas to seven-year-old Drew Barrymore, and with John Williams’s stirring music – but most of all, he perfected the design of the alien itself. E.T. is, of course, endearing, yet tinged with melancholy: although he befriends the young protagonist almost instantly, above all, he longs to find his way home; and no one could begrudge him that.

The discussion will cover not only technical possibilities but also ethical and social impacts. What does an “enhanced” body mean for our identity? And how close are we to visions we know today mainly from films? Artificial inteligence is a topic that is no longer only the domain of science fiction, but undoubtedly a future part of a human 2.0.
